Karioi Sport Horses is very fortunate to be located just 13 kms from one of New Zealand’s coolest little towns – Raglan. Raglan has a population of 3,500 permanent residents and is located about 50 kms west of Hamilton City.
Raglan is most famous for its black iron sand and its left hand surf break – reputed to be the longest (and one of the best!) left hand breaks in the Southern Hemisphere. Surfers travel from around the globe to surf at Manu Bay, and there are national and international surfing competitions held there each year.
Raglan lies beneath the dormant volcano of Mt Karioi – which translates to the Sleeping Lady, for at the right angle the image of a woman in slumber can clearly be seen. The mountain is of course the namesake of Karioi Sport Horses. From the farm the mountain rises majestically to the west.
Raglan is also well known for its bohemian lifestyle, musicians and artists. There are a number of good cafés and restaurants, and a pub where the locals gather. It is a sleepy little place which has thankfully been little affected by the booming tourist trade.
There are many activities to participate in including tramping, surfing, fishing, kayaking, golf and tandem skydiving. If thats not your style you can have a coffee and take a leisurely walk through the boutiques and galleries that line the main street.
